Vision Statement
Grant County youth/adults are demonstrating healthy, safe and responsible behavior/actions.Mission Statement
A coalition promoting responsible behaviors to reduce/prevent substance abuse and other risky activities among youth & adults in Grant County. We accomplish this by: · Educating our youth in substance misuse and abuse · Encouraging youth & adults to make healthy decisions · Providing leadership opportunities for youth and adults · Sponsoring drug-free activities in our communities · Collaborating & networking to maximize our effectiveness.Goal and Objectives
S.A.F.E. will achieve the goals by attaining the following objectives: 1) Maintaining/enhancing/developing anti-drug groups in area school districts through an annual Youth Leadership Conference as well as working with Southwest WI Technical College and UW-Platteville ATODA Greek/student groups 2) Providing research-based prevention curriculums/programs and after school programs in area schools 3)Initiating campaigns/initiatives to combat underage drinking/driving, including an alcohol tax increase 4)Continue to offer the Fresh Start program that has effectively changed attitudes towards drinking and has reduced underage drinking violations 5). Initiating campaigns/initiatives to combat youth tobacco use and secondhand smoke 6)Coordinating tobacco/alcohol compliance checks to limit youth access to alcohol and tobacco products 7). Providing parent programs designed to prevent/intervene in youth/adult drug abuse, including Strengthening Families, First Breath, Familiy Nights, and Parent Conferences. 8) Administering the Southwest WI Youth Survey or the Grant County Youth Survey every two years to effectively access the four DFC core measures and assess the effectiveness of community-based programs/efforts 9) Gather/ analyze local suplemental community data from an annual Risk and Protective Survey and a community mapping project to more effectively target services 10) Provide training to coalition members as availability and funding permits 11) Disseminate successful local intiatives via a quarterly coalition newsletter, website, and conferences/workshops/meetings. 12) Sponsor at least two community suppers/town hall meetings or The Plunge annually to increase public awareness of emerging drug issues 13) Partner with the Iowa-Grant Drug Task Force, Riverway Communities of Hope coalition, Cassville Alliance for Teens, and other entities to more effectively provide services to the county. Our objectives for our new STOP grant include: 1) Create and maintain Neighborhood Watch programs around the UW-Platteville campus to help reduce underage drinking parties and other risky behaviors 2) Create and maintain an Underage Drinking Task Force through the Sheriff's departments to conduct Party Patrols and Cops n' Shops Programs 3)Provide car chips to parents to monitor teens driving 4). Survey Grant County schools for ATODA curriculum at all grade levels to try to fill any gaps in services to youth, and 5) Work with UW-P to improve policies regarding off-campus parties and communication with parents if students receive underage drinking violations.Regular Meetings
We are meeting every other month (odd months, primarily on the 4th Thursday, unless we need to work around holidays) as our working committees are so active in completing the work of the coaliton.Funding Sources
We combined three coalitions (Roundtable of Grant County, Grant County Tobacco-Free Coalition, and Safe Communities Coaltiion)to form the overall coaltiion (now called S.A.F.E); thus, we share our funding sources to fund our programs/projects. We also receive funds through the Office of Juvenile Assistance (that we administer for the Riverway Communities of Hope so youth can receive ATODA treament and Mental Health Services) and federal funds from SAMHSA through the Drug-Free Community Support and STOP programs.Activities or Programming
