Mission Statement
The Mission of the Intercultural Leadership Initiative is to help ease racial tensions at Lakeland Union High School (LUHS) by promoting cultural understanding through inter-cultural experiences at the elementary school level.Goal and Objectives
Goals: 1. To reduce racial tension and conflict in the high school. 2. To implement a district-wide transition program from the elementary schools into the high school. 3. To improve educational success rates for Native American students in the district. Goal #1 Objectives: A. To initiate, coordinate and maintain a supporting and advising coalition of teachers, administrators, and school boards which represent the four feeder elementary schools and the high school; Native and non-Native community leaders, local foundations, tribal government, service clubs, community organizations, faith organizations, parents, businesses and individuals; and statewide organizations and foundations. Measured by number of people attending meetings, correspondences, diversity of funding supporters, etc. B. To collaborate with the high school on development, scope and sequence of their component program which will serve to increase positive social interactions between Native and non-Native students and reduce the numbers of disciplinary actions at the high school related to racial tensions. Measured by comparing data already collected compared to data following ILI intervention and attitudinal surveys (baseline and after ILI). C. To facilitate sessions where students learn specific concepts via active learning techniques which relate to cultural tolerance, understanding and breaking down barriers to communications between, and within, Native and non-Native students. Measured by numbers of sessions, and by attitudinal pre- and post-surveys for students, parents and teachers. D. To research and develop a curriculum related to interpersonal and intercultural relationships for grades 4-12. Measured by development of ILI Curriculum package. Goal #2 Objectives: A. To revive and maintain a creative transition program for all students coming from the outlying feeder schools into the high school through after-school and summer experiential activities. Measured through number and success rates of transition activities (pre- and post- surveys on transition issues for students, parents and teachers). B. To gain consensus from all the schools to continue to use ILI as the district-wide program of choice for transition activities. Measured through consensus of school administrators in the district after completion of transition activities in 2003. C. To provide ILI programming for high school staff and personnel so they become familiar with transition issues--not only between 8th and 9th grades but also between 1st and 2nd semester of freshman year--while becoming culturally competent and sensitive through ILI training. Measured by numbers and success rates of programming (attitudinal pre- and post- surveys for students, parents and teachers). Also measured by pre- and post- surveys on transition issues. D. To provide ILI programming for community leaders and parents so they become familiar with transition issues while becoming culturally competent and sensitive through ILI training. Measured by numbers and success rates of programming (attitudinal pre- and post- surveys for students, parents and teachers). Also measured by pre- and post- surveys on transition issues. Goal #3 Objectives: A. To increase the graduation rates and decrease the drop-out, suspension, expulsion, referrals and truancy rates for Native American students, and increase the GPA?s for Native students at the high school level, so they are equal with their non-Native peers in all of these areas. Measured by collecting and comparing current graduation, drop-out, truancy and expulsion rates of Native students following ILI intervention to previous years? data on non-ILI Native students. B. To increase the grade point average of Native American students at the high school level, thus closing the ?grade point gap? between Native and non-Native students. Measured by collecting and comparing grade point averages of native students following ILI interviention to previous years? data on non-ILI Native students.Regular Meetings
We currently meet throughout the school year with 4th-12th grade area students.Funding Sources
